Hitler was an Atheist! Stalin was an Atheist! Pol Pot was an Atheist!
Wrong! Wrong! and Wrong!
This turns up a lot; that atheists are nothing but immoral, child-eating, heretical, blah, blah, etc. etc.
This point of view is going to need some serious light to blast away the ignorance.
The truth is these men weren’t atheist. In the case of Stalin and Pol Pot they believed in an ideology that stated religion was an oppressive force towards the working classes and should be gotten rid off. Hitler on the other hand was a different story.
Where to start? First off, he was a bit of a mad man. And when I say mad, I mean delusional. He did express a dislike for the Judea-Christian doctrines because of the bit about caring for the weak and the poor. And also the Jew parts. But did believe.
Back to the delusional thing. The man had a Messiah complex; meaning that he thought he was on a divine mission from god. This mission of course, he believed, was to kill all Jews and restore the Roman Empire under the German Flag.
Now, stay with me on this one, I haven’t seen anyone make this argument so I may be a bit out in my analyses. Hitler did start a new religion; based on him as the new Messiah. That much is fact. He declared that all alters of the Reichskirche must have a copy of “Mein Kampf” and a sword. *Unfortunately I can’t find a reference, so it might have been under another name besides Reichskirche, but here the Wikipedia page on his beliefs*
Lets review: man thinks he’s the chosen one, sets up pagan religion which he’s the head of and person of worship. Sound familiar?
Does god king ring any bells? Yes, you’ve guessed it! Egypt and the Pharaoh Kings!
Unfortunately my knowledge of Pol Pot is not as good as it should be for a post like this. But I can state, in the case of Hitler and Stalin, that the “cult of personality” was very much used; setting up the image of these men, in the eyes of the public, as demi-gods (only a slight exaggeration), certainly greater then common members of the public.
So in conclusion, these men were nutters– not rational, scientific, open-minded Atheists.
Here’s my twitter account. Please follow. I’ve no friends… It’s lonely being an Irish atheist…
Darwin party! :
In a week or so, the trumpets will sound, heralding the start of 18 months of non-stop festivities in honor of Charles Darwin. July 1, 2008, is the 150th anniversary of the first announcement of his discovery of natural selection, the main driving force of evolution. Since 2009 is the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth (Feb. 12), as well as being the 150th anniversary of the publication of his masterpiece, “On the Origin of Species” (Nov. 24), the extravaganza is set to continue until the end of next year. Get ready for Darwin hats, t-shirts, action figures, naturally selected fireworks and evolving chocolates. Oh, and lots of books and speeches.
You know how it’s 12 at night, there’s no good videos to stream, you’ve read all the comics, and your still stuck on that level in that game you got 2 days ago.
Isn’t it always around that time that you start another blog?
Just me!? Okay….
Anyway, I’m Irish and Atheistic.
I don’t have a whole pile of love for religion since it’s ultimate goal -directly or indirectly- is to subvert people to one idea; rejecting all else other ideas, criticisms, and beliefs. Although this isn’t the case with all religions, but most of those are dead… so that’ll teach them!
There are a number of arguments against atheism, skepticism, and scientific method being applied to life; but I hope to address these issues and continue to point to example where this is wrong. And since I live by the scientific method I will try and highlight examples where the opposite is true.
AND DO NOT TELL ME HITLER AND STALIN WERE ATHEISTS!! They were dicks who fancied themselves as GOD KINGS. Remember? Like the pharaohs.
Ahmm, moving on, I write about all this now because… well… first- I managed to get the name irishatheist. Second- I love studying religion, myths and beliefs from an academic point of view (fancy name for amateur historian. Also, no need to point out the contradiction), and to see these ridiculous teachings still holding sway in our society makes me so angry… I JUST WANT TO WRITE A BLOG… well, there you have it.
In summary your honour, I started this hedonistic blog to express my worry over the demonic regeme of religion, and I wish to add to the enlightenment of others… very pompous I know, but still I want to share what I think of as a magical (yes, I use that adjective on purpose) window to knowledge that is available to us in the present day.
